NEW First Aid Course Names
Effective June 0f 2026, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) that oversees First Aid training in the workplace announced NEW names for both the old Emergency and Standard First Aid courses.
WHY Did They Do This?
The NEW names for the course are BASIC (the old Emergency) and INTERMDEDIATE (formerly Standard First Aid). To better align with National Safety Standards, more specifically CSA-Z1210.
WHAT Does This Mean For You?
For Employers and Workers alike, nothing changes. All previously issued Emergency and Standard First Aid certificates remain valid. The only change you will see is a name change on the certificates for new Employees taking the courses for the first time or Employees renewing their First Aid training.
One of the goals of Health & Safety training is consistency. Or, in other words, standardization. While this may seem confusing right now. Having the same names and standards in all Provinces and Territories will make it much easier for all Sectors in the future.
